An early learner literacy solution for emerging readers

Hoot Reading is here to help all kids reach their highest potential. Hoot reading connects emerging readers and real teachers to practice reading over video calls. The Hoot app was incubated at the Nokia Research Lab with Sesame Workshop (the creators of Sesame Street) and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center. As Lead UX Designer I lead research and design projects for the following digital products.

The customer website is the primary touchpoint for Hoot Reading customers. The UX design process begins with understanding the objectives of the business as well as the target audience. Hoot Reading’s target audience is parents of emerging readers, Teachers seeking to support emerging readers, and school districts looking for literacy solutions.

Hoot Reading App

The Hoot Reading App is the platform that connects teachers with students for online lessons. The app has three user profiles Teachers, Students, and Parents. Features of the app include Browsing the library for books, Viewing scheduled lessons, Joining live lessons via video chat, and Lesson notes for teachers. 

Designing for kids

Designing for kids is unique the target audience has a wide range of abilities. Colors make a big impression on children’s young minds. Color choices and combinations that would likely be rejected or laughed at when designing a typical website may be welcomed on a website for children. Nowadays children spend more time online than ever. This creates the demand for good kid­friendly design which is more than just bright colors and some illustrations. UX for kids should be based on children’s psychology and rely on strong user research. This slide deck indetifies some of the key focus areas when designing for kids.

Hoot App Student Profile Target User

User Feedback & Observational Research

Open Replay an open-source session replay suite provided insight on user behaviors and pain points. I was able to relive the users experience. Feel their struggle,  and uncover hidden issues. A few areas for improvment include the following.
